Female Archetypes in Astrology – Wife, Mother, Sister, Daughter
“Asteroid Goddesses” by Demetra George, ACS Publications Inc US 1986 – a summary & review
According to Demetra George, the female archetypes in astrology are identified as asteroids: Juno, Ceres, Vesta & Pallas Athene. Asteroids are located in BOTH female and male birth charts and although you may resonate to the qualities of all archetypes, most women will identify with the primary energy of one.
Wife – Juno – the divine consort, queen of hearts, water
Juno is committed to relationship & union with another in order to learn about self. In partnership it is possible to dissolve the illusion of ego separateness. Juno types make excellent advocates for woman’s rights & anything to do with intimate relationship including homosexuality or Freudian complexes. They are open to investigating & creating new forms of relating but must overcome jealousy & attachment. Polarity: intimacy/manipulation
In order to find magic Juno types could: discover tantra, explore ‘power’ themes in relationships, work with mirrors, release blocks to relationship eg childhood issues, betrayal, abandonment. Practice mother/father meditation, view marriage as sacred union, honour ‘soulmate’ connections, embrace the feminine self & social ritual of male/female partnership.
Mother – Ceres – earth mother, universal mother
Ceres types are ‘all nurturing’, doing whatever it takes to support & sustain life. They are the mothers, cooks, farmers, crafts women, adopting unconditional love & acceptance. This natural earth energy invokes transformation, birth, death & renewal. They are the teachers & educators of children, having to learn about attachment, sharing & letting go. Ceres types may be single parents &/or may need to overcome their own parent /child complexes. Polarities: compassion/anger
In order to find magic, Ceres types could: develop self worth, esteem & positive self image. Work towards the relief of world hunger, feed the impoverished, nurture the children & their own ‘inner’ child, develop rituals for transformation & dying, investigate the mysteries of womanhood, the moon cycles, connection to nature, natural childbirth etc.
Sister – Vesta – the eternal flame, fire & hearth
Vesta follows causes or idealistic beliefs, she actively pursues self regeneration & follows spiritual or devotional paths. Yoga is perfect for Vesta types. She needs to retreat from the world periodically, maybe through art or creative pursuits. Her role is to free herself from sexual inhibition or emotional complexes to ultimately create union with self. Polarity: devotion/fanaticism
In order to find Magic, Vesta types could: use creative visualization, embrace ceremony & ritual, develop their psychic skills, practice seva or volunteer work & work on self becoming focused, centred & committed.
Daughter – Pallas Athene, the warrior queen, Goddess of wisdom & justice, air
Pallas Athene invokes our ‘warrior’ self, she is multi-talented, creative & intelligent. She may have endured separation from her matriarchal heritage to develop strength & independence. She uses her mind & senses, invoking visions & following logic. She is politically & socially aware, competitive & androgenous having spent time to develop her body, mind, career & self knowledge. What any man can do, she can! Polarities: courage/fear
In order to find magic, Pallas types can: develop clairvoyant & psychic skills, practice self healing techniques, especially mind over matter. Work with the soul, kundalini & the use of energy. Their greatest gift comes from integrating love & creativity.
‘Asteroid Goddesses’ is an excellent resource book for anyone who loves astrology.
