Healing with sound – Mantra & Satsang

March 20, 2013

Mantra – to liberate the mind

A sound, word, phrase or set of words consistently repeated with the intention to create transformation. The Sanskrit root of the word means ‘man’ – to think & ‘tra’ – to liberate.

tibetan bowlWhy use a Mantra?

… to stop the mind from running away

… for focus & discipline

… for spiritual attainment

… to imprint a concept or ideal

… to free the mind from attachment

Some popular Hindu Mantras:

Om (Aum) – for oneness with the ‘all that is’

Om mani padme hum – the jewel is in the lotus, opening the heart to spiritual awakening

Om namah Laksmi namah – salute to the Goddess Laksmi for love & support

Om shanti – for peace or bliss

Om nameh Shivaya – salute to Lord Shiva, the divine in me & in all things

Om shri Ganeshaya namah – salute to Ganesha, remover of obstacles

In Hindu belief the vibration of sound began creation, so repetitive sound or thought put into sound creates & manifests. Mantras are objective & support our connection to Oneness, the all that is.

Satsang – to be in the company of the ‘highest truth’

Satsang is about coming together to be in the company or association of the guru or the highest truth. A gathering of like-minded souls, Satsang goes beyond all religion to create a space through music & sound for the devotee to find their inner truth. For the true guru ‘satguru’ is within. Participants follow a guide to chant & repeat healing mantras.
