Babushka dolls – the onion layers of healing

May 14, 2012

I saw & couldn’t resist purchasing a set of Babushka dolls, the happy pink folk art, cutesy doll eyelashes and exotic temple painting, an offering of  worlds beneath worlds.  First called ‘nesting’ dolls these wooden dolls, hailing from Russia in the 1890’s, were carved from a single piece of wood, two opposing cup shapes fitting together with a piece within a piece. The dolls were decorated in folk art, traditionally using peasant girls. The Babushka, to me, represents the onion layers of healing. As we peel back the layers, we return to the ‘baby’ within, the ‘child’ self, the seed upon which so much has been compounded. And, so it is with our healing journey. Sure, if we had done a little along the way, we may still resonate to the purity, simplicity & beauty of the child self. But we have overlooked our personal, emotional & spiritual health. The healing journey is to peel back the layers of pain & suffering with compassion & grace to resonate again in the heart of pure bliss & innocence.
